The
museum strives to showcase the work of regional artists, who
work in a variety of media and form, through rotating exhibits.
Artists are sought from around the state where they may be
showing in galleries or are promoted in newspapers for speaking
to relevant issues. Working as advocates for artists, the
museum partners with private business to sponsor full color
art mailers featuring artists' works to announce upcoming
exhibitions.

Collecting,
maintaining and ultimately exhibiting an outstanding permanent
collection are top priorities of the museum.
| While
current facilities do not allow space to exhibit the permanent
collection at this time, individual works are occasionally
rotated through the gallery. Please check the calendar
for scheduled showings. |
A
sampling from the museum's permanent collection includes original
works by Salvador Dali, Mackendrie Long, Kathe Kolwitz and
Kenneth Noland, Audubon prints, pre-Columbian pottery and
a 22nd Egyptian Dynasty mummy and coffin ensemble which was
among the first permanent pieces acquired by the museum in
the 1950's.
Working
closely with the British Museum and specialists in the field
of Egyptology, experts have concluded that the anthropoid
coffin set and mummy encased in cartonnage are nearly three
thousand years old. The ensemble was found in the Fayuum area
of Egypt, a rich agricultural oasis south of Cairo, at the
turn of the twentieth century. With very few examples found
in that particular area, the museum's acquisition is rare.
For many years, the mummy and coffin were the only such relics
held south of Washington DC. During 2005, the mummy traveled
to Boston for a nearly year-long stabilization and restoration
process.
The
museum welcomes inquiries regarding additions to the permanent
collection. Please contact Rebecca at 704-873-4734 or rthackston@iredellmuseums.org.
