The Faith Experience — Photography of Sean Meyers
January 21, 2011

Faithful Feet by Sean MeyersSTATESVILLE —Iredell Museums presents The Faith Experience, a series of black-and-white and color photographs, by Sean Meyers of Salisbury, NC.  The exhibit will be held at the Court Street Gallery, 134 Court Street, in downtown Statesville from January 28 through April 1, 2011.  The opening reception for the artist will be held on Friday, January 28, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm.  The reception is open to the public, free of charge.  The Gallery is open to the public free of charge Tuesday through Friday from 10:00am to 5:00pm, or by appointment.

A seasoned photojournalist, Sean Meyers thrives on documenting and capturing moments that define who we are as Americans, as southerners, and as human beings.  He continually strives to use his photojournalist’s eye to create fresh aesthetics that will allow his subjects and audiences to share in and expand his perspective.

The Faith Experience documents traditions of faith, spirituality, and devotional expression throughout the North Carolina Piedmont region.  The exhibit will feature 18 black-and-white and color images that showcase a wide variety of religious practices ranging from Catholic, Protestant, and Baptist Christianity to Islam and Hinduism.  While one photograph depicts Hindu women worshipping in brightly colored cultural dress, another image presents the viewer with a display of a somber Good Friday Crucifixion.

The images from The Faith Experience are printed directly onto canvas as opposed to the glossy, smooth surface one normally expects when they see a photograph.  A conscious decision by the artist, this textured picture plane increases the presence and intimacy of the spiritual subject matter.  “With this project, I wanted not only to create awareness of the wide variety of religious/spiritual beliefs that permeate our geographical region; but also, in creating this awareness, to foster an interest in and tolerance of religious/spiritual diversity,” says Meyers.

Sean Meyers received a Bachelor of Science in Journalism in 1991 from the University of Florida and has 15 years of professional newspaper and magazine experience, including publications in the Dallas Morning News, People, ESPN Magazine, and Newsweek.  He currently teaches digital photography classes at Catawba College and operates his own freelance photography business in Salisbury.
